Among the wide variety of businesses in the greater Richmond area, there’s a thriving private practice, Dominion Medical Associates Inc., owned and operated by Dr. Richard Jackson. Born and raised in Jackson Ward, in Richmond Virginia, Dr.Jackson, comes from a lineage of medical professionals. His mother was a nurse, who retired to raise him and his three siblings.
His father, grandfather and uncle were all physicians, and Dr. Jackson followed in their footsteps, saying “I never really wanted to be anything else”. His nurturing and dedicated parents kept him protected from racism and gang culture, which allowed him to focus on his studies and grow without internalized limitations.
Upon graduating he started internal medicine in his father’s practice. Later he and a group of other doctors in the community came together to form a single practice, Dominion Medical Associates Inc. The hardest part of which was managing the new practice and learning the business aspect. His work life balance was almost non-existent in the beginning, as he figured everything out.
During this time racism was heavily prevalent in the healthcare field. Dr. Jackson recalled that white doctors would only see black patients on certain days. The majority of his patients were poor, and under-privileged, getting unfair treatment from other doctors. He built a strong relationship with his patients, which helped him better diagnose them because they trusted him enough to tell him the details of their medical issues. His practice enabled black people to be seen by a licensed professional on any day of the week, and be valued and genuinely cared for, which made Dr. Jackson a more reasonable choice for healthcare needs. His practice grew rapidly as he built trust within the community, receiving referrals from patients that kept his business steady for 50 years.
Today, Dr. Jackson is still serving the community, having met and served multiple generations of patients. His favorite part of the job? Helping and healing others. He operates his practice alongside his son AJ, who manages the medical research department. The practice is part of multiple organizations for Doctors and healthcare professionals. Dr. Jackson says his vision for the future is to expand past the healing portion of healthcare and into health maintenance, as he notices many people gravitating towards building healthy lifestyles and fighting to stay healthy and live longer. His dedication to his patients have kept the Dominion Medical Associates Inc., thriving and his ever lasting commitment to the community has touched the lives of many.
